TuneWiki Updates Social Music Player for Android With Friend Tracking

TuneWiki, an excellent social music player that has seen a couple of hardware preloads, has updated their Android app with a significant UI overhaul and a few new features. There’s a new SongBox that lets you see what your friends are listening to as they’re listening, for one. TuneWiki will also detect if there are any gaps in your music collection, and offer over-the-air previewing, purchasing and downloading of tracks.

As always, TuneWiki offers live lyrics as a song plays, links to related YouTube videos, streaming internet readio stations through SHOUTcast, and even see geotagged songs as they’re being played. With those Song Maps, you can meet folks with similar musical tastes, and through them find new tunes that are up your alley. It’s much more personal than the automated discovery mechanism built by Pandora and similar services, isn’t it?

TuneWiki is a great little service that adds a lot to your existing music collection, and if you’re willing to stomach a few ads, it’s completely free.  The app can apparently plug into Last.fm, which is currently the biggest hub for social music, but I haven’t been able to find the option. I guess TuneWiki’s more interested in developing their own community. To get started, you can get the updated app in the Android Market, or snag the older one for BlackBerry here, or iPhone below.
