Even with existing and upcoming mobile payment solutions, PayPal, is making easier than ever by integrating NFC into its mobile app for Android devices.
Whether you like it or not, NFC will eventually be everywhere and smartphones will be its first stop. The video below shows just how simple PayPal has made it to send or receive money by just tapping two NFC-enabled devices together.
I honestly had thought that PayPal had already come up with an NFC solution, as it just makes sense for the company. With mobile payments on the rise, we’re glad to see that PayPal has wasted no time in implementing this soon to be booming technology and with what looks to be very easy to get up and running..
At the moment, there are only so many handsets with NFC chips inside, but that will likely change in the coming months. NFC Technical Lead of Google, Nick Pelly, stated back in May that there will be dozens of NFC-enabled Android phones will be shipping this year and while this is likely for its own service, PayPal will benefit just as much.
PayPal is obviously focusing on Android for the new NFC peer-to-peer service, as competing mobile operating systems have yet to release a NFC device. We can imagine that will change later this year, especially if the next iPhone does ship with the near field communication chip inside. That said, if that is the case, Apple will likely announce its own mobile payment service to compete with the likes of PayPal, which may be another reason the company may have chosen to go with Google’s OS.
Some companies aren’t sold on NFC as a mobile payment platform but by year’s end we’ll see if the nay-sayers will be eating their own words.
