IHS is forecasting that 275.3 million tablets will be sold in 2015, up from its earlier prediction of 242 million units. The estimate for this year is 60 million, so you may wonder what prompted the research company to raise its figures.
Yes the tablet prices will further go down and mobile operators will do their best to sell customers another device (along with another contract), but the main reason is… Apple.
This year, the Cupertino-based company will accunt for 74% of all tablet sales and will keep the lion’s share through 2013. In 2015, iPad will move more than 120 million iPads, securing 44% of the market and up to $72 billion in tablet sales (presuming the price of $600).
At the same time, IHS reduced the shipment forecast for non-iPad tablets, adding these [mostly Android-based products] are encountering “slower-than-expected sales” and facing other challenges, such as the lack of available apps. We can only hope this part will change soon with the upcoming release of Android Ice Cream Sandwich…
