Chinese chip maker Allwinner unveiled its latest product, a new Optimus Board featuring its own A80 octa-core processor.

In its current form, this product doesn’t seem made for smartphones and tablets. It will, however, enable vendors to make their own Android-based mini PCs. In fact, we would assume that with Optimus Board out, we can expect to see an onslaught of such devices launching in the weeks and months to come.

The board ships with a pair of USB ports and there are also other expansion options that will allow vendors to differentiate their offerings from the rest of the pack.

As for the mentioned A80 chip, it relies on ARM’s big.LITTLE design, featuring four powerful Cortex-A15 and four battery friendly Cortex-A7 cores.

Finally, it’s worth mentioning that some earlier Allwinner chips have been favored by the hacking community which managed to cram some versions of Linux on devices with Allwinner chips. We’re not sure whether the Optimus Board will get the same treatment, but we definitely hope that will be the case…
