Smart cars are coming. We know that, and major handset makers know that. Heck, they want us to use their gear while at home, outside or while driving.

Samsung has an edge in many markets but not in the auto industry. At least not yet.

During the CES, the Korean company demonstrated how their Galaxy Note 3 phablet can work with a Trek Bike prototype. The device, which Sammy calls the Galaxy – Trek Bike, has a special mount for holding your big phone while pedaling. In this setup, your exercise will be transformed into electrical energy, getting the Note 3 the much needed juice. Plus, you’ll also be able to learn about your bike ride, accessing such information as pace, distance, calories burned and so on.

Another example is Galaxy Gear integration with BMW i3, the German company’s electric car. In this case, your smart watch connects via the BMW iRemote Application only to provide you with some handy information like the status of the i3’s battery, range, the status of doors and windows, etc. Moreover, Gear owners also get to control the in-vehicle air conditioning, or send an address to the car’s navigation panel.

Pretty sweet though unfortunately we don’t know when these two ideas will be turned into real products. Hopefully it will be a short wait…
