Microsoft SkyDrive renamed to OneDrive

Goodbye SkyDrive, hello OneDrive! Six months after British Sky Broadcasting Group (BSkyB) has forced Microsoft to rename SkyDrive, the Redmond giant has unveiled the new brand for its cloud storage service – OneDrive.

As that was the case with SkyDrive, OneDrive will also be marketed as a service where users can store and share their documents, photos and other content. The promotional video is already live on YouTube and you can see it embedded below.

The name change isn’t something you will notice today; according to Microsoft, this will be a gradual process in which no user should affected. The service will continue to operate as you expect and “all of your content will be available on OneDrive and OneDrive for Business respectively as the new name is rolled out across the portfolio.”

The OneDrive brand may have something to do with Microsoft’s new naming scheme which started with the introduction of the Xbox One. Next, we hope to see Windows One, but alas – we’ll have to wait a little longer to get “one Windows to rule them all.”
