Rumor has it that Apple plans to use sapphire glass in the upcoming iPhone 6. The Cupertino giant already uses this durable material but only on very small areas such as the camera lens and fingerprint sensor, but that could change (expand) soon.
At the moment, only luxury phone makers such as Vertu and Gresso can justify the use of the more expensive (compared to the regular glass) sapphire glass screens. But not for long… Samsung and LG are reportedly exploring the use of this material in their future devices, as well. Given the price of sapphire glass, we’ll likely see it being used only in the very high-end phones with low- and mid-range products shipping with “regular” glass, instead.
According to Korean media reports, both companies have recently got in touch with sapphire glass manufacturers / suppliers in order to receive a few samples of their work. It is, however, unknown when either of the two will start using this material. Samsung in particular doesn’t have much incentive to do so, given its strong relationship with Corning. Then again, market forces will likely unite and push the world’s largest phone maker towards taking a different route for at least some of its products.
Meanwhile, we have smaller devices like the upcoming Moto 360 smart watch rocking this rather expensive glass, which should deliver that much harder to break device.
