Huawei is looking to join the sapphire glass craze later this year, with the company’s CEO Yu Chengdong showing a special version of the Ascend P7 to the reporter. He went on to add that we should expect “shocking products” from the company, which BTW is looking at high-end market for future growth.
Yu said that Huawei is a “marathon type of player” that wants to become a premium product maker like Audi or Porsche, rather than Volkswagen. To this end, Huawei claims that it will no longer manufacture ultra-low-end white-box devices at the request of the mobile operators, and will rather focus on development of its own brand products.
As part of that strategy we may see more of Huawei-made devices rocking better (as in – more expensive) materials like sapphire glass in the future. Moreover, they are gearing towards expanding their e-commerce business and may even open new e-commerce channels. Perhaps they start opening stores in the West as part of these initiatives?
Meanwhile, we expect Huawei to enter the smart watch market at some point this year, or in early 2015. Chances are they have what it takes to compete in this market, as well. More to come, obviously.
