The race for the world’s thinnest smartphone title continues. China’s Gionee is already holding that crown with its 5.55mm-thin Elife S5.5 model, but that apparently is not enough. They want to give it another shot and slash another millimeter along the way.

The company is teasing the device on Chinese social media and we’ve got to learn about it from GSMarena. Said teaser showcases handset phone thinness champions from the past, including the Motorola V8, Apple iPhone 4, Motorola XT910, and Gionee’s own Elife S5.5.

No word whether this new phone will ever make it to the Western hemisphere so I’m not sure most users care about this. What’s more, a device that is 5mm thin will most certainly have a downside in the form of shorter battery life. Simply put, you can’t cram a decent battery into something that thin.

That being said, we would still like to see Gionee bringing its hardware to Europe and North America. Simply put, more choice is better. 😉
