Google launches Gemini Intelligence for Android with proactive AI automation

Android is making its biggest leap into artificial intelligence yet. Google’s mobile operating system is becoming an “intelligence system” that anticipates your needs and handles complex tasks automatically, rather than just responding to your commands.

The transformation centers on Gemini Intelligence, a new AI system that Google announced for its most advanced Android devices. The system integrates premium hardware with innovative software to work proactively throughout your day while keeping your data private and giving you control over what it does.

This shift represents Google’s answer to growing competition in AI-powered mobile interfaces, particularly from Apple’s Intelligence features and emerging AI-first devices. As smartphones become saturated and upgrade cycles lengthen, tech companies are betting that practical AI assistance will drive the next wave of device adoption.

Gemini Intelligence will roll out in waves starting this summer with the latest Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel phones. The system will expand to Android watches, cars, glasses and laptops later this year.

The most significant new capability is automated task management across multiple apps. Gemini Intelligence handles complex workflows that typically require switching between several applications and manually entering data. The system can reserve a front-row bike at your spin class, find a syllabus in Gmail and add required books to your shopping cart, or build a grocery order from a photo of your handwritten list.

The automation becomes more powerful when combined with visual context. Users can long-press the power button over any content and ask Gemini to take action based on what it sees. For example, you could photograph a travel brochure and ask Gemini to “find a tour like this on Expedia for a group of six.” The system tracks progress through notifications while working in the background, but only acts on direct commands and stops when tasks are complete.

Chrome browsing will also get smarter with Gemini integration starting in late June. The AI can research, summarize and compare content across websites, while Chrome’s auto-browse feature handles routine tasks like appointment booking or parking reservations.

Form filling, one of mobile users’ most persistent frustrations, gets an overhaul through enhanced Autofill capabilities. Gemini’s Personal Intelligence will automatically populate complex forms using relevant information from connected apps, including Chrome. The feature requires explicit opt-in and can be toggled on or off in settings.

Voice input is improving with a new feature called Rambler, designed for natural speech patterns. Unlike current speech-to-text systems that require careful articulation, Rambler handles the way people actually talk:

  • Processes self-corrections and repetitions
  • Filters out “ums,” “ahs” and “likes”
  • Converts rambling speech into concise, polished text
  • Supports seamless switching between multiple languages in a single message

Audio is transcribed in real-time and not stored or saved, according to Google.

Android’s signature widgets are getting an AI upgrade through Create My Widget, which lets users build custom dashboard elements using natural language descriptions. A meal prepper could ask for “three high-protein meal prep recipes every week” and get a functional dashboard widget. Cyclists could create weather widgets showing only wind speed and rain data. These widgets work across Android phones and Wear OS watches.

The changes extend to Android’s visual design with an updated system building on Material 3 Expressive. The interface uses purposeful animations to reduce distractions and help users focus on current tasks.

Gemini Intelligence represents Google’s most ambitious attempt to differentiate Android through AI capabilities. The success of these features could influence whether consumers see practical value in AI-powered smartphones, or whether the technology remains more novelty than necessity. The gradual rollout starting this summer will provide an early test of consumer appetite for proactive AI assistance on mobile devices.
