ASUS ROG XREAL R1 gaming AR glasses go global with 240Hz micro-OLED displays

ASUS Republic of Gamers has announced global availability of the ROG XREAL R1, claiming it as the world’s first 240Hz micro-OLED gaming AR glasses. Pre-orders open May 15, 2026, with worldwide shipping starting June 1.

The R1 creates a massive 171-inch virtual display with 0.01ms response time, targeting gamers who want portable big-screen experiences. ASUS developed the glasses in partnership with XREAL, the lightweight XR hardware company, following the product’s debut at CES 2026.

This launch comes as AR gaming hardware tries to find its footing in the consumer market. While VR headsets have gained traction, AR glasses for gaming remain niche. ASUS is betting that tight integration with its ROG ecosystem, particularly the ROG Ally handheld, can change that equation.

The R1’s standout feature is its 240Hz refresh rate on micro-OLED panels, significantly higher than most AR displays currently available. The glasses project content at a 57-degree field of view, covering up to 95% of the user’s focused vision. Motion-to-photon latency sits at 3ms, which should minimize lag during fast-paced gaming.

Key specifications include:

  • Sony 0.55-inch micro-OLED displays at 1920×1080 resolution
  • 700 nits peak brightness with boost mode enabled
  • 106% sRGB color gamut coverage
  • Native 3DoF support with 6DoF capability
  • Sound by Bose audio technology
  • 91g total weight

The glasses work best when paired with ASUS’s ROG Ally handheld gaming device. This setup enables dual-screen functionality where the virtual 171-inch display shows the main game while the Ally’s built-in screen handles real-time adjustments. Users can modify brightness, screen size, aspect ratio, and visual effects through the Ally’s Armoury Crate SE app without interrupting gameplay.

For PC users, ASUS includes a ROG Control Dock that connects with DisplayWidget Center software. This combination allows keyboard and mouse control over virtual screen layouts and gaming enhancements. The system includes AI-powered features like Dynamic Crosshairs and automatic content detection for viewing mode adjustments.

The R1 uses XREAL’s X1 spatial computing chip to provide native Three Degrees of Freedom support. This enables two main modes: Anchor mode pins the display to a fixed position in space, while Follow mode tracks with the user’s head movement. The glasses also offer real-time 2D-to-3D conversion for existing game libraries.

Electrochromic lens technology automatically adjusts transparency based on user engagement. When someone looks away from an anchored screen, the lenses become transparent. They tint again when the user returns their gaze. Manual controls offer three tint levels plus instant transparency activation.

The gaming AR market remains small but is growing as hardware improves and prices potentially drop. ASUS’s approach of deep ecosystem integration rather than standalone functionality could help differentiate the R1. However, success will likely depend on pricing, which ASUS has not yet disclosed, and whether the ROG Ally integration proves compelling enough to drive adoption.

The R1 represents ASUS’s broader push into premium gaming accessories that complement its existing hardware lineup. By creating products that work best within the ROG ecosystem, the company aims to increase customer retention and average spending per user across multiple product categories.
