Nothing is bringing a new phone to India next month, and it marks the start of a brand new product line. The company has officially announced that the Phone (4b) will launch on July 7 at 3:30 pm. It will be the first phone in Nothing’s new b-series, which sits below the existing a-series in the company’s lineup.
This is a notable move for Nothing. The brand has built a following with its transparent design and clean Android software, but its phones have mostly targeted the mid-range segment. The b-series is clearly an attempt to reach buyers at a lower price point, potentially pulling in a wider audience in a market as competitive as India.
Nothing co-founder Akis Evangelidis has explained the thinking behind the new naming structure. Numbers indicate the generation of the product, while letters define the tier. So the b-series sits below the a-series, which itself sits below the flagship phones. He also confirmed that the “Lite” branding, which appeared once with the Phone 3a Lite, is being dropped going forward.
A teaser sketch video already shared by Nothing gives some early clues about what to expect from the Phone (4b). The phone appears to keep the brand’s transparent rear panel, which has been a defining part of its identity since the very first model. However, the sketch suggests a single rear camera, which is an unusual choice even for a budget phone. Most phones at this price level ship with at least a dual camera setup, so this could be a sticking point for buyers who care about photography.
On pricing, Nothing has not made any official announcement yet. The Phone (4a) series starts at Rs 37,999 in India, so the Phone (4b) should come in below that. But it is worth tempering expectations about just how affordable it will be. Component costs, particularly for memory, have been rising across the board, and that is pushing entry-level prices up industry-wide. A significantly cheaper phone is possible, but an ultra-budget device seems unlikely given current market conditions.
There are a few reasons to pay attention to this launch beyond just the price:
- It marks the debut of an entirely new product tier for Nothing
- The company is restructuring how it names and positions its phones going forward
- If priced right, it could make Nothing’s design and software experience accessible to a much larger group of buyers in India
- It gives shoppers considering the Phone (4a) a reason to wait and compare
Anyone already eyeing the Phone (4a) series would be sensible to hold off for a couple of weeks. July 7 is not far away, and knowing how the Phone (4b) is priced and specced will make the decision a lot clearer.
