Sending money abroad is a monthly reality for millions of people living in the United States. Yet until now, no wireless carrier had thought to make that easier as part of a phone plan. Total Wireless just changed that.
The Verizon-owned prepaid brand has announced a partnership with Western Union that gives customers on select plans one free money transfer per month. It is the first time any U.S. carrier has built an international money transfer benefit directly into a wireless plan, and it signals a broader shift in how prepaid brands are thinking about the communities they serve.
The move makes sense when you look at the numbers. Millions of U.S. residents send money overseas every year, with the average sender making more than 12 transfers annually. Those transaction fees add up fast. By folding one monthly transfer into the cost of the plan, Total Wireless is making a direct financial argument to customers who are already paying for connectivity.
Which plans include the benefit
The Western Union transfer benefit is automatically included in three Total Wireless no-contract plans:
- MAX 5G BYO – $25/month for customers bringing their own device
- MAX 5G – available with auto pay
- ALL ACCESS – $60/month with auto pay
All three plans include unlimited 5G data, unlimited hotspot, and international talk and text to over 200 countries. Prices are locked in for five years, with taxes and fees included.
How the money transfer actually works
There is no separate sign-up or activation required. Customers on eligible plans can redeem their monthly transfer through the Western Union app or at westernunion.com. The transfer fee is covered by Total Wireless, so the sender keeps more of what they earn.
Western Union’s network is genuinely large. Recipients can receive funds through:
- More than 360,000 payout locations worldwide
- Bank account deposits
- Digital wallets
- Card delivery
The reach covers more than 200 countries and territories, which makes this practical for a wide range of immigrant communities across the U.S.
Why this partnership goes beyond a simple perk
Total Wireless and Western Union are both targeting largely the same customer base: people who want affordable, reliable services and who often have family living outside the U.S. The partnership is not just a product add-on. Western Union will also promote Total Wireless across its own channels, including the Western Union app, email lists, social media, and in-store screens.
David Kim, president of Verizon Value, framed the deal around a values argument: “No one should have to choose between staying connected and taking care of the people they love.” Jesse Mory, Western Union’s Senior Vice President of Strategic Partnerships, echoed that: “By partnering with Total Wireless, we’re making it easier for customers to support the people who count on them.”
What this means for the prepaid wireless market
Prepaid carriers have spent years competing on price and data allowances. Adding financial services to a wireless plan is a different play entirely. It positions Total Wireless not just as a cheap phone plan, but as a practical tool for people managing cross-border family responsibilities.
Total Wireless operates roughly 2,000 exclusive retail stores across the U.S. and runs on Verizon’s 5G network, including Ultra-Wideband coverage. It is part of Verizon’s broader prepaid portfolio, which also includes Straight Talk, Visible, Tracfone, and Simple Mobile.
If this model works, expect other carriers to take notice. Bundling financial services into wireless plans could become a real differentiator in the no-contract market, particularly as prepaid brands fight harder for customer loyalty without the usual contract lock-in.
