Most tri-fold phones exist to make tech press lose their minds at trade shows and then disappear into obscurity. Samsung might actually be trying something different this time. According to Android Central, Samsung’s next tri-fold device is shaping up to be significantly more accessible than its predecessors, and that single detail changes everything about how we should think about this product category.
The original tri-fold concept phones from various manufacturers were basically proof-of-concept devices wearing a retail price tag. Huawei’s Mate XT launched at roughly $2,800. That’s not a phone. That’s a down payment on something sensible. Samsung watched all of this happen and, to its credit, seems to be course-correcting before it even enters the space properly.
So why does this matter beyond the obvious? Because foldables as a category are still fighting for mainstream relevance. The Galaxy Z Fold line has improved dramatically year over year, but sales numbers have never matched the hype. A tri-fold phone at a price that doesn’t require a second mortgage could genuinely move the needle. Not just for Samsung, but for the entire foldable segment. If one major player proves the form factor can sell at a reasonable price, competitors will follow fast.
There’s also the software angle here. Samsung has spent years optimizing One UI for multi-screen experiences. A tri-fold gives that work an actual stage to perform on. Three panels means three distinct use cases: phone mode, tablet mode, and something in between that nobody has fully figured out yet. That middle ground is where things get interesting, and Samsung’s app ecosystem is better positioned than most to actually fill it with useful functionality.
Still, skepticism is fair. Samsung has a habit of shipping first-generation hardware with first-generation problems, then fixing everything in year two. A tri-fold is mechanically complex. More hinges mean more potential failure points. Durability testing will matter a lot here.
But the price signal alone is enough to pay attention. If Samsung can land this thing under $2,000, the conversation about tri-folds changes completely. Watch this space closely.
