Apple making a big deal out of its 20th-anniversary iPhone is a given. But the direction the design is reportedly heading? That’s the interesting part. According to Apple Insider, the iPhone 20 is shaping up to be a glass-dominant device that takes clear cues from the iPhone Air, while also packing what sounds like a more capable thermal system under the hood.
The details come from Fixed Focus Digital, a Weibo-based leaker with a mixed track record. They claim the iPhone 20 will be built primarily from glass, with a mid-frame design that closely mirrors the iPhone Air. It’s also expected to be similarly thin. None of the glass stuff is new, exactly. Curved glass and solid-state buttons have been floating around in iPhone 20 rumors for a while now. But the Air comparison is worth paying attention to, because that phone made some real engineering compromises to hit its thickness target.
The more compelling detail is the cooling story. Fixed Focus Digital says the heat dissipation plate inside the iPhone 20 will be increased by roughly one inch. That’s a meaningful spec if accurate. The iPhone Air currently skips vapor chamber cooling entirely, which is a notable step down from the iPhone 17 Pro line. So if Apple is planning to put a genuinely powerful chip inside an ultra-thin anniversary device, it needs a thermal solution that can actually keep up.
There’s a reasonable case for vapor chamber cooling making its way into the iPhone 20. The same leaker previously claimed the iPhone Fold will use multiple vapor chamber plates, so Apple is clearly thinking about heat management in new form factors. Whether the iPhone 20 goes that route or just adds more conventional cooling material, more thermal headroom is a good sign either way.
Still, Fixed Focus Digital has gotten things right before, like correctly calling the iPhone 16e name, but has also missed the mark. So take all of this with some salt. What’s clear is that Apple has a genuine design challenge ahead: building a phone thin enough to feel special, while making sure it doesn’t throttle under pressure. The 20th-anniversary iPhone has to be more than just a pretty slab of glass. Apple knows that too.
