And one of them is a foldable. According to Macworld, this is the first time Apple’s entire next-generation iPhone lineup has shown up explicitly in internal iOS code, and the details are pretty hard to ignore.
The references were buried in system files tied to battery drivers and Battery Intelligence features. That’s not a random place to hide hardware hints. Apple has to prep iOS for new power configurations before those devices ship, so it makes sense that unreleased iPhones would turn up here first. The six internal codenames found in the beta map out to a surprisingly complete picture of what’s coming.

Earlier betas of iOS 27 had already teased support for foldable displays and dual-battery setups, neither of which exist in any current iPhone. That context matters a lot here. Apple isn’t just naming devices in the code, it’s building out the infrastructure to support them. Foldables need different power management logic than a standard slab phone, and a second battery adds another layer of complexity. The groundwork is clearly being laid.
So what’s actually coming this fall? The current expectation is that Apple will split its iPhone 18 launch across multiple events or timelines, which would be a real departure from its usual “one big September” approach. The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are expected to arrive alongside the foldable iPhone Ultra at Apple’s fall event. But the standard iPhone 18, the budget iPhone 18e, and the second-generation iPhone Air are all reportedly pushed to early 2027. That’s a significant change in strategy, and it suggests Apple is prioritizing premium and high-margin products first.
This kind of staggered release schedule isn’t without risk. Apple has trained its customers to expect a full lineup drop every September, and holding back the cheaper models could frustrate buyers who aren’t ready to spend Pro money. Still, if the foldable is as ambitious as the battery code hints suggest, Apple probably needs more time to get the lower-end devices right rather than rushing them out.
Apple’s fall event is expected to be announced within weeks, which means iOS 27 beta 5 could be one of the last major betas before the public release in mid-September. Codenames in beta software this close to launch aren’t usually a fluke. These phones are coming. The only real question left is exactly when you’ll be able to buy them.
