After months of leaks, renders, and speculation, Poco has finally put a date on the calendar. September 1 is when the Poco F9 series goes global, and if the rumored specs hold up, this could be one of the more interesting mid-to-flagship releases of the year. According to Gizmochina, the lineup will include two models: the Poco F9 Pro and the Poco F9 Ultra. No standard model, just like last time.
Both phones are rebranded versions of the Redmi K100 Pro and Redmi K100 Pro Max, which already launched in China. That’s pretty standard Poco playbook at this point. Xiaomi builds something great for the Chinese market, Poco slaps a new name on it and pushes it global at a competitive price. It’s a formula that’s worked before, and with the hardware reportedly packed into these two, it could work again.
The chip powering both devices is the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, which is Qualcomm’s latest and includes a gaming-focused V-series variant that already debuted on the Chinese models. That’s a big deal. Flagship-tier processing at Poco pricing has always been the brand’s main pitch, and they’re sticking to it.
On the display front, the F9 Pro is expected to get a 6.59-inch QHD+ Plastic OLED panel running at 185Hz. That refresh rate number is a bit unusual, but a QHD+ screen at that speed is genuinely sharp and smooth in daily use. The F9 Ultra steps things up with a larger 6.85-inch panel at 2608 x 1200 resolution. Both displays are reportedly developed with TCL CSOT, with Xiaomi involved in the design and materials side. So these aren’t just commodity screens thrown in to hit a price point.
The rumored extras are where things get fun. Bose-tuned speakers would be a serious differentiator if that pans out. IP69 certification means this thing can handle high-pressure water jets, which is a step above the IP68 you usually see. Metal frames on both models. And the F9 Ultra might have an LED notification ring around the camera module, which sounds like either a genuinely useful feature or a flashy gimmick depending on how Poco implements it. Jury’s still out on that one.
Here’s why this matters beyond just the specs sheet. Poco has spent the last couple of years carving out a lane as the brand for people who want flagship performance without the flagship price tag. The F-series is their standard-bearer for that promise. But competition in this space has gotten fierce. Motorola, iQOO, OnePlus, and even Samsung’s mid-range lineup have all gotten sharper. Poco needs this launch to land cleanly, with real global availability and pricing that actually makes sense outside of China.
A quick summary of what we’re expecting:
- Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 on both models
- F9 Pro: 6.59-inch QHD+ OLED, 185Hz refresh rate
- F9 Ultra: 6.85-inch 2608 x 1200 display
- Bose-tuned speakers
- IP69 water resistance certification
- Metal frame construction
- LED notification ring on the Ultra
We’ll know more on September 1. But based on what’s out there, Poco looks like it means business with this one.
