Redmi 17C 5G is here, and it’s gunning for budget buyers who actually want 5G

Not every phone needs to cost a fortune to be worth talking about. The Redmi 17C 5G is priced at S$279, which works out to roughly $220 USD, and it’s targeting the kind of buyer who wants real 5G without paying flagship prices. Xiaomi launched the device in Singapore, and while global availability is still up in the air, this one deserves attention.

A camera setup that punches at its price

The rear camera is a 50-megapixel shooter with an f/1.8 aperture, which is a solid spec for this price range. Wide aperture means better low-light performance, and Xiaomi backs that up with a dedicated Night mode. You also get HDR, Portrait mode, and 1080p video recording at 30fps. There’s also an auxiliary lens alongside the main camera, though Xiaomi hasn’t gone into detail about what it actually does, which is a little frustrating.

On the front, there’s an 8-megapixel selfie camera with HDR, Portrait, Night mode, and a soft-light ring. That last feature is genuinely useful for late-night video calls when you don’t want to look like a ghost on screen. So the camera story here is reasonably complete for a budget phone, even if it’s not going to challenge anything in the mid-range.

What you’re actually getting for S$279

The Redmi 17C 5G comes in three color options:

  • Black
  • Brown with a vegan leather finish
  • Purple

The vegan leather finish on the Brown variant is a nice touch. It tends to feel better in the hand than glossy plastic and it’s less of a fingerprint magnet. Budget phones with premium-feeling materials aren’t common, so credit where it’s due.

Why this phone matters beyond Singapore

Budget 5G phones are becoming the real battleground for smartphone makers right now. As 5G networks roll out across Southeast Asia, South Asia, and beyond, there’s a massive wave of buyers looking to upgrade from 4G without spending big. The Redmi 17C 5G sits right in that sweet spot.

The S$279 Singapore price translates to around Rs 19,000 in Indian rupees, which puts it in a fiercely competitive bracket. Xiaomi hasn’t confirmed pricing or availability for India or other markets yet. But given Redmi’s history of aggressive pricing in India especially, it’s not hard to imagine this landing there soon at a similar or lower price point.

Still, until Xiaomi says something official about broader availability, potential buyers outside Singapore are just waiting. And at this price, a lot of people will be watching closely. Budget 5G is no longer a novelty. It’s becoming the expectation, and phones like the Redmi 17C 5G are exactly why.
