Even low Earth orbit satellites sit about 350 kilometers above your head. Your nearest cell tower might be a few hundred meters away. That gap, literally the distance between you and the sky, is exactly why T-Mobile’s CFO Peter Osvaldik is cooling off any hype around replacing terrestrial networks with satellite coverage.
Speaking at the Evercore Partners TMT Global Conference, Osvaldik explained why using Starlink as a full satellite-to-phone replacement for cell towers just isn’t realistic right now. The physics are working against it. Radio signals weaken over distance, and by the time a signal travels 350km down from a low Earth orbit satellite, it’s already losing the battle against speed and reliability. That’s exactly why satellite SOS features are mostly limited to text messages. Nobody’s streaming video over them.
And that’s before you factor in physical obstacles. Walls, roofs, dense tree coverage, basically anything between you and open sky becomes a problem. Cell towers don’t have this issue to the same degree because they’re close, they’re everywhere in populated areas, and they’re built to punch through everyday environments. Satellites simply can’t match that right now.
So where does Starlink actually fit? T-Mobile and SpaceX are already working together, and the partnership makes real sense as a coverage extender. Rural areas and remote locations are chronically underserved by traditional networks because carriers naturally build towers where the customer density justifies the investment. That leaves mountains, farmland, and remote highways with patchy or zero signal. Satellite coverage can fill those gaps without requiring a tower in the middle of nowhere.
That’s a genuinely useful role. But it’s a supporting role, not a starring one. The idea of satellite fully replacing ground-based infrastructure is something SpaceX’s Elon Musk has openly chased, and some analysts think an outright acquisition of T-Mobile by Musk could push that vision forward faster. Whether that happens or not, the technology isn’t there yet.
For now, think of satellite connectivity as a safety net for the edges of the map, not a replacement for the network you actually rely on every day.
