Here’s something nobody really expected: fixed wireless access, the technology that was pitched as a lifeline for rural homes stuck on slow DSL, is now mostly being used in cities. That’s not a knock on the technology. If anything, it’s proof that FWA has outgrown its original pitch.
According to Ookla’s Speedtest Intelligence data, roughly 70% of FWA speed test samples in Q2 2026 came from urban users, with rural areas accounting for just 30%. Meanwhile, total U.S. 5G FWA connections from T-Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T hit 17 million in Q1 2026, which works out to nearly 14% of all home broadband subscriptions in the country. That’s not a niche product anymore.
T-Mobile is still in a different league
If you’re shopping for FWA service right now, the numbers are pretty clear. T-Mobile posted a median download speed of 222.7 Mbps in Q2 2026, which is 38.4% faster than AT&T Internet Air and 76% faster than Verizon 5G Home. On uploads, T-Mobile’s 18.1 Mbps was 80% faster than AT&T and 48.5% faster than Verizon. Latency also goes to T-Mobile, at 46 ms median multi-server latency in Q2 2026.
AT&T deserves some credit here though. Its Q1 2026 median download speed of 167.3 Mbps was nearly 60% higher than what it posted in Q3 2025. That jump is almost certainly tied to AT&T’s $23 billion EchoStar spectrum deal, which handed the company 50 MHz of additional low and mid-band spectrum. AT&T said in November 2025 that the new spectrum was already live and improving performance. The data backs that up.
Leaves are slowing down your home internet
All three providers saw speed drops between Q1 and Q2 2026. Verizon took the biggest hit on downloads, falling from 143.6 Mbps to 126.5 Mbps. T-Mobile’s upload speeds dropped 21.5% in the same window. AT&T wasn’t far behind with nearly a 20% upload decline.
The reason is surprisingly low-tech: trees. Dense summer foliage blocks and weakens wireless signals, and hotter temperatures create thermal noise inside network equipment, which pushes devices toward slower, more stable connection modes. Ookla first flagged this seasonal pattern in late 2025, and the 2026 data confirms it’s a consistent trend, not a one-off dip.
Rural users are still getting a worse deal
The urban-rural gap in FWA performance is real and consistent across all three providers. Rural users see higher latency and lower download speeds, with urban users posting median multi-server latency anywhere from 7 ms to 13 ms lower than rural counterparts. That’s a meaningful difference for anything time-sensitive like video calls or gaming.
The FCC’s minimum broadband standard sits at 100 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload. Ookla found that fewer than 40% of FWA users in 48 states hit that threshold. Only Hawaii, New York, and Washington D.C. cleared the 40% mark. So while FWA is growing fast, a lot of users, especially in rural areas, still aren’t getting what regulators consider acceptable broadband speeds.

FWA is no longer just a stopgap for underserved rural markets. It’s a mainstream broadband option that tens of millions of households are actively choosing. But the performance gap between urban and rural users is a problem worth watching as providers figure out how to make the technology work equally well for everyone.
