What you’re actually getting
According to Engadget, the S26 FE starts at $700 and is sized similarly to the S26+, but with specs that land closer to Samsung’s mid-range A57. That gap is real and it matters. The biggest spec difference is RAM. Every other phone in the S26 lineup ships with 12GB, but the FE makes do with 8GB. It’s not a step back from last year’s FE, but it does stick out when the rest of the family has moved on.
The price increase is reportedly tied to the ongoing global RAM shortage, which is fair enough as an explanation, but it still stings a little for budget-conscious buyers.
Design: good from far, far from glass
The S26 FE keeps the clean, streamlined look of the S26 family. Aluminum frame, small camera bump, nothing flashy. But the rear panel is polycarbonate, not glass. Samsung isn’t advertising that loudly, and honestly, if you don’t go looking for it, you might not even notice. Still, at $700, you’d hope for a little more premium feel in hand.
Software features worth caring about
Samsung has brought over a solid chunk of the AI features that debuted on the core S26 lineup earlier this year. That includes:

How it feels in real life
In a brief hands-on session, the writer at Engadget noted that the S26 FE felt surprisingly close to its pricier siblings in day-to-day use. Indoors, brightness wasn’t noticeably worse. The phone felt responsive and quick. So far, so good. But the Exynos 2500 chip powering this one hasn’t been tested hard yet. The rest of the S26 family runs on the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy, which is a more powerful processor, and that gap could show up during gaming or heavy multitasking.
The real competition is a used S26+
Here’s where it gets complicated. The S26+ starts at $900 new, so the S26 FE’s $700 price looks attractive on paper. But used S26+ units are already selling for around the same $700. If you’re comfortable buying pre-owned, you’d get better specs for the same money. The S26 FE’s pitch is really for buyers who want that peace of mind of a brand-new device with a warranty attached.
