The rest of the time, the phone is quietly dialing things back to save battery. OnePlus might be about to fix that, and the fix sounds genuinely impressive.
According to Gizmochina, tipster Digital Chat Station dropped a Weibo post with fresh details about the OnePlus 16’s display. The headline claim is a 165Hz refresh rate that works system-wide, not just in select games or apps, but everywhere. Scrolling through settings, reading emails, using the camera app, all of it at 165Hz. OnePlus has apparently been teasing this for weeks, so it’s not completely out of nowhere.
The panel itself is a custom BOE unit built around something called the X4 luminescent material. BOE developed this specifically for the OnePlus 16, which matters because custom display work usually translates to real visual improvements rather than just spec-sheet padding. On top of the panel, there’s reportedly a self-developed display chip made with a new manufacturing process, and that chip goes through three separate calibration stages before it ships. That kind of detail suggests OnePlus is taking display quality seriously, not just chasing numbers.
Other reported features include Oppo’s latest eye-protection tech and narrow bezels on all four sides. The software side is expected to run ColorOS 17, with new animations built specifically around the higher refresh rate. So the whole experience, hardware and software, is supposedly tuned together. That’s the right approach.
For gamers, the phone is expected to use Oriental Screen 4.0 alongside upgraded gaming features. OnePlus China president Li Jie already confirmed that three exclusive gaming technologies are being overhauled for this phone. He didn’t say which three, but pairing that with a true 165Hz global refresh rate would put the OnePlus 16 in a strong position against the Samsung Galaxy S26 and whatever Xiaomi brings to the table this fall.
The display race in Android has been getting more interesting lately. Brands are pushing past 120Hz, adding LTPO panels that intelligently switch rates, and investing in panel partnerships to stand out. A genuinely global 165Hz implementation, if OnePlus actually pulls it off, would be a meaningful step beyond what competitors are doing right now.
