Here’s something that should genuinely excite Android fans: the same OLED panel inside Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro is reportedly heading to the Galaxy S27 Pro and Galaxy S27 Ultra. That’s not a small detail. That’s Samsung’s own display division supplying its best material to a competitor first, and now finally bringing it home.
According to SamMobile, citing a report from ETNews, the Galaxy S27 Pro and Galaxy S27 Ultra will feature Samsung Display’s M16 OLED panels. This would be the first time in three years that Samsung’s mobile division has upgraded to a new OLED material for its Galaxy S lineup. Both phones will also get Color Filter-on-Encapsulation (COE) and Privacy Display technology built in.
So what does M16 actually bring to the table? Higher peak brightness, better power efficiency, improved color accuracy, and a longer display lifespan. It’s already running in the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, Google’s Pixel 11, and Vivo’s iQOO 16. Samsung has been supplying these panels to other brands while its own flagship phones were still running older OLED materials. That gap is finally closing.
The base Galaxy S27 and Galaxy S27+ won’t get the M16 treatment, but they’re not being left behind entirely. Both models are expected to move to M14 OLED panels, which is still a step up from the M13 material used in the current Galaxy S26 and Galaxy S26+. It’s a tiered upgrade, which makes sense given the pricing differences across the lineup.
On the size front, the Galaxy S27 is expected to come in at 6.27 inches, while the Galaxy S27+ stretches to 6.66 inches. The S27 Pro sits at 6.47 inches and the S27 Ultra leads the pack at 6.89 inches. Nothing shocking there, but the Ultra’s panel in particular should look stunning if the M16 specs hold up in real-world use.
This matters beyond just one phone launch. Display quality has become one of the sharpest battlegrounds in the premium smartphone market. Apple made a big deal about its display improvements with the iPhone 18 Pro, and if Samsung delivers the same underlying panel tech in the Galaxy S27 Pro and Ultra, the comparison shopping just got a lot more interesting. Android users who felt the display gap growing between iOS and Galaxy flagships have reason to pay attention.
Looking even further out, the M16 upgrade is expected to extend to the Galaxy Z Flip 9, Galaxy Z Fold 9, and Galaxy Z Fold 9 Ultra when those devices arrive in the second half of 2027. The current foldable lineup, including the Z Fold 8 and Z Flip 8, still runs on M13 panels. So this is a multi-year rollout of Samsung Display’s best tech across its own product line.
The Galaxy S27 series is expected to launch early in 2027. No pricing has leaked yet, but if Samsung delivers on the display promise, the Pro and Ultra models will have a very compelling reason to justify whatever premium they carry.
