Scam detection in your messages app sounds like a dry, background feature. But when Google expands it to cover seven languages across ten countries, that’s a big deal for a lot of people who have been locked out of it until now. That’s the headline from Google’s September 2026 Pixel Feature Drop, which is rolling out now to supported Pixel devices.
According to Android Headlines, Scam Detection in Messages will now support English, Portuguese, German, Spanish, Arabic, French, and Japanese. Regional availability covers the US, UK, Australia, Canada, Singapore, India, Germany, Mexico, Japan, and France. Before this update, the feature was largely limited to English speakers in a handful of markets. Opening it up to Arabic and Japanese speakers especially feels significant given how targeted SMS and messaging scams have become in those regions. This is Google putting real AI utility where it counts.
The Feature Drop also brings improvements to Pixel VIPs, the feature that lets you pin your most-called contacts for quick access. Starting with Pixel 6 and newer, you can now place shortcuts directly on your home screen to call or text a VIP contact with a single tap. Google is also adding what it calls “glanceable notification badges” to help you stay on top of messages from the people who matter most. It’s a small quality-of-life tweak, but the kind of thing that actually changes how you use your phone day to day.
Pixel Watch fans are getting some love too. Raise To Talk is getting improvements on the Pixel Watch 4 and Watch 5, and there’s a new one-handed pinch gesture that opens the notification tray so you can scroll through alerts without needing two hands. If you use Raise To Talk regularly, this update is genuinely worth getting excited about. It’s one of those features that sounds minor but feels wrong when it doesn’t work perfectly.
Then there’s the fun stuff. Google is dropping Harry Potter audiobook-themed packs that include a themed wallpaper, system sounds, and icons. If you’re a fan, that’s a nice touch. If you’re not, it’s easy to ignore. These kinds of themed packs are becoming a regular part of Feature Drops, and honestly they’re harmless flair.
Here’s what this Feature Drop gets right overall: it’s not stuffed with gimmicks. Most of what’s here is practical. Expanding scam detection to more languages is the kind of move that protects real people from real threats. The Pixel VIPs update makes your most-used contacts easier to reach. And the watch gestures fix an actual annoyance. Google has been leaning harder into AI safety features over the past year, and scam detection is one area where that work is clearly paying off.
