iPhone 18 Pro pre-orders smash records across Chinese retailers

A 27% markup. Within the first hour. That’s the story of the iPhone 18 Pro launch in China, and it tells you everything about where consumer demand sits right now. Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max hit Chinese retail platforms on Saturday evening at 8 p.m. local time, and they were basically gone before most people finished dinner.

According to Kursiv Media, Taobao reported that first-hour sales more than doubled what the platform saw during last year’s iPhone launch window. The Flash Sale event pushed total Apple product sales volume to more than 25 times a normal trading day. That’s not a small bump. That’s a completely different scale of demand.

And the secondary market didn’t waste any time. Resellers on Dewu, a major Chinese resale platform, jumped on the shortage immediately. The silver 256GB iPhone 18 Pro Max was averaging 13,999 yuan in transactions, which is a 27.3% premium over Apple’s official price. The burgundy version of the same model was going for 12,799 yuan, a 16.4% markup. Even the standard Pro, not the Pro Max, was trading at roughly 10% above retail at the base 256GB tier.

So why is demand this intense? Part of it is the hardware. The iPhone 18 Pro series is running Apple’s new 2nm A20 Pro chip, which is a real generational step in processing power. The camera system is also updated, with a 48-megapixel Fusion setup replacing the previous configuration. And the titanium chassis is back, which still matters to buyers who want something that feels premium in hand.

But the bigger picture here is about China specifically. Apple has been fighting hard to hold market share in the country against increasingly strong competition from Huawei, Xiaomi, and others. A launch that breaks records and sends resale prices through the roof is exactly the kind of signal Apple needs to show that its high-end lineup still has serious pull in the world’s largest smartphone market. Investors and analysts will notice.

There’s also the supply angle worth watching. When resellers can immediately apply premiums of 10 to 27%, it signals that Apple either couldn’t or didn’t produce enough units to meet launch-day demand. That’s good for hype, but it’s also frustrating for regular buyers who just want the phone at retail price. Apple has dealt with this pattern before, and it tends to resolve within a few weeks as supply catches up. Still, the secondary market prices are a useful real-time gauge of how much people actually want this thing.

The key specs driving buyer interest include:

  • 2nm A20 Pro chip, Apple’s most powerful mobile processor to date
  • 48-megapixel Fusion camera system with upgraded processing
  • Titanium chassis across the Pro lineup
  • iPhone 18 Pro Max starting at approximately 10,999 yuan at official retail

Whether demand holds once supply stabilizes is the real question. But right now, the iPhone 18 Pro launch in China is one of the strongest Apple has seen in years. That’s not nothing.
