iPhone 18 Pro Face ID is glitching out and some users are not happy

Apple’s biggest launch of the year and some people can’t even unlock their apps. That’s the situation facing a growing number of iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max buyers right now, and it’s the kind of bug that makes a $1,000-plus phone feel embarrassing to own.

As reported by MacRumors, multiple early adopters are running into a specific Face ID problem on the new Pro models. When the phone tries to authenticate Face ID for a particular action, like unlocking a locked app, it sometimes just fails. And not quietly. The device freezes, sits there doing nothing, and then reboots straight to the lock screen. It’s not a one-off glitch from a single unlucky buyer either. A Reddit thread picked up by 9to5Mac shows this is hitting real users in the wild, right out of the box.

This matters because Face ID isn’t some secondary feature. It’s the primary way millions of people interact with their iPhones every single day. Unlocking apps, approving payments, autofilling passwords. When that breaks, it doesn’t just annoy you. It slows down everything. A phone that randomly reboots mid-task is not a premium experience, and Apple charges premium prices.

The broader context here is also worth paying attention to. Face ID has been a core part of the iPhone experience since the iPhone X back in 2017. Apple has had nearly a decade to refine it. So when a launch-day crowd starts reporting consistent failures with a feature that’s supposed to be rock solid, that’s a quality control story, not just a tech support ticket.

It’s also a reminder that being an early adopter still carries real risk. Every year, some buyers rush to get the newest device on day one, and every year, some of them end up beta testing the final product. That’s just the reality of complex consumer hardware shipping at massive scale.

Apple has not officially commented on the issue yet. If the reports keep spreading, a software patch will likely follow. But for anyone who just paid top dollar for an iPhone 18 Pro, waiting for a fix is a frustrating way to start the relationship.
