Solar charging on a smartwatch has always felt like a nice-to-have gimmick. A thin strip of solar cells around the bezel, a few extra hours of battery if you’re lucky. Amazfit is taking a different approach with its new T-Rex Dual Solar, and honestly, it’s the first time solar charging on a wrist device actually makes sense.
Amazfit has launched the T-Rex Dual Solar as its first AMOLED smartwatch with solar panels on both the front and the back. That rear panel is twice the size of the front one, and it’s designed to pull in extra energy when you take the watch off and set it face-up. Three hours a day at 50,000 lux of sunlight and the front panel alone can add up to nine extra days of battery life. Stack both panels together, and you have something genuinely useful for multi-week expeditions where a power outlet is not a realistic option.
The baseline battery life sits at 25 days in typical use mode. Drop it into continuous GPS with full accuracy and you get 41 hours, which is still competitive in this category. The watch runs on a 1.32-inch AMOLED display that peaks at 3,000 nits of brightness, the same ceiling as the Amazfit Active 3 Premium. So you’re not giving up screen quality to get the solar setup.
Build quality is where Amazfit is clearly trying to justify the $649.99 price tag. The bezel is Grade 5 titanium, the glass is sapphire crystal, and the whole thing is rated to 10 ATM water resistance. There’s also a built-in flashlight and an SOS signal feature for emergencies. Amazfit used a similar titanium-plus-sapphire combination on the T-Rex Ultra 2, but that watch leaned on a bigger battery rather than solar charging. The Dual Solar takes a different philosophy entirely, betting that renewable input beats raw capacity for long-haul outdoor use.
Navigation is a real selling point here. The watch ships with preloaded full-color maps, route planning tools, slope data for climbs, and the ability to store up to 100 routes. You can build new routes directly on the watch without touching your phone. Stray off course and it will generate a new path automatically. The LiveShare feature lets people back home follow your location in real time, which is genuinely useful safety functionality for solo trekkers.
On the fitness side, the T-Rex Dual Solar covers the expected ground:

The box includes a silicone strap and a USB-C charging base, but no charging cable. Packaging is fully recyclable. Amazfit clearly wants points for sustainability here, though skipping the cable feels like a cost-cutting move dressed up as an environmental gesture.
This watch fits into a broader push from wearable brands to crack the outdoor and adventure market, a space dominated by Garmin for years. Amazfit has the specs to compete on paper, and dual-sided solar is a genuine differentiator no one else is doing right now. Whether outdoor adventurers trust Amazfit the way they trust Garmin is a different question. But at $649.99, the T-Rex Dual Solar is making a serious argument. It’s available now.
