The main shooter is a 64MP Sony sensor, which is a meaningful step up and not just a spec sheet flex. Sony sensors have a strong reputation for color accuracy and low-light performance, so this could genuinely matter for everyday photos.
The AI side of things is powered by Indus by Sarvam, a homegrown Indian language model. You can use it to write drafts, ask questions, and plan tasks, all in your native language. For a country where local-language digital tools are still catching up, having this baked straight into the phone at the budget tier is a smart move. HMD also included support for the Sanchar Saathi app, a government-backed platform that gives users telecom safety tools like SIM card tracking and fraud alerts.
On the software front, the phone runs Android 16 out of the box. HMD is promising two years of security updates, but there is no OS upgrade commitment, so Android 16 is what you get for the life of the phone. That’s a sticking point. Two years of security patches is fine, but no major OS update at this price point is a trade-off buyers should know about before they commit.
The hardware package also includes dual stereo speakers and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Yes, the headphone jack. Still here, still useful, and still something a lot of people actually want on a budget device. No dongles required.

Whether it’s enough to pull buyers away from well-established competitors is the real question, but at least the strategy makes sense.
