Huawei Mate 90 Pro Max is here, and it’s swinging for the fences with a 200MP periscope camera and a 12,000-nit display

A 12,000-nit display on a phone. Let that sink in for a second. That’s not a typo, and it’s not a marketing trick buried in the fine print. That’s the peak brightness Huawei is putting on the Mate 90 Pro Max, and it’s just one of the numbers on this phone that’ll make you do a double take. According to Gizmochina, the device has officially launched in China, and the full spec sheet is exactly as ambitious as the leaks suggested.

The Mate 90 Pro Max is clearly built around one core idea: photography. Not in a gimmicky, software-filtered, “our AI makes your photos look better” kind of way. This is Huawei going after serious camera hardware, and the results on paper are hard to argue with.

A camera setup that’s actually interesting

The headliner is a 200MP RYYB periscope telephoto camera. RYYB sensors replace the traditional green pixels in a camera array with yellow ones, which lets in more light. Huawei has used this approach before, and it’s genuinely effective in low light. Pairing that with a periscope lens design means you get serious optical zoom without a massive camera bump taking over the back of the phone.

There’s also a 13MP ultrawide selfie camera with autofocus up front, plus a 3D depth-sensing camera. And the phone supports 4K video recording, so it’s not just a stills machine.

The modular camera is the wild card

Here’s where things get genuinely interesting, and maybe a little niche. The Collector’s Edition of the Mate 90 Pro Max can pair with Huawei’s Ruiying Z10 module, an external camera attachment built around a 1-inch RYYB sensor. It adds 10x continuous optical zoom, a 24-240mm focal range, and an f/2.0 to f/4.5 aperture. That’s a proper zoom range for a clip-on module.

Modular camera accessories have come and gone over the years, and most of them ended up as expensive novelties that people used twice and forgot about. Whether Huawei has cracked the form factor or not remains to be seen, but the specs on the Ruiying Z10 are serious enough to take a second look.

The rest of the phone

Beyond the camera story, the Mate 90 Pro Max is packing a 6.9-inch dual-layer OLED display and a 6,800mAh battery. That’s a big battery, and a big screen. The dual-layer OLED tech is what enables that extreme brightness figure without cooking the panel, and it’s something we’re starting to see more of from Chinese flagship makers.

Pricing and what you actually pay

This is where it gets spicy. The Ruiying Z10 module alone costs CNY 5,999, which is roughly $900. The complete Pro Max camera kit with the module included comes in at CNY 19,499, around $2,910. So yes, this is a premium product for a premium buyer. There’s also a small rig teleconverter kit available for both the Pro Max and the Collector’s Edition at CNY 1,799, about $270.

These are China launch prices, and availability outside the region is still unclear. But the ambition here is obvious. Huawei is building a phone for people who want a proper camera system in their pocket, not a compromise. Whether the real-world results justify the real-world price is the question worth asking when hands-on reviews start rolling in.

  • 200MP RYYB periscope telephoto camera
  • 6.9-inch dual-layer OLED display with 12,000-nit peak brightness
  • 6,800mAh battery
  • 13MP ultrawide selfie camera with autofocus and 3D depth sensing
  • 4K video recording support
  • Optional Ruiying Z10 module with 1-inch RYYB sensor and 24-240mm zoom range

The Mate 90 Pro Max is not trying to be a phone for everyone. And honestly, that’s kind of refreshing.
