Apple and LG are teaming up on smart home hardware, and it’s a direct shot at Amazon

Apple is putting its name behind someone else’s name. That’s the most interesting part of this story. According to TechCrunch, Apple and LG are working together on a range of smart home devices, but when these products hit shelves, they’ll carry the LG brand. Not Apple. Not even a co-branding situation. Just LG. For a company that usually plasters its logo on everything and makes the hardware experience feel completely its own, that’s a notable move.

So what’s actually in the lineup? The reported product range includes a smart lock, a thermostat, a doorbell, indoor and outdoor security cameras, and a floodlight camera. That’s a serious spread of home security hardware, and it maps almost perfectly onto what Amazon has been selling through Ring and its Alexa-connected ecosystem for years. Apple is clearly looking at Amazon’s smart home business and deciding it wants a piece of that market.

All of these devices are designed to work with Apple’s upcoming smart home hub, which is expected to launch around October 13. That hub is said to feature a 6-inch square display that can sit on a countertop or mount to a wall. Think of it as the central brain for everything, the thing you check when the doorbell rings or when you want to adjust the thermostat without pulling out your phone. Apple has been quietly building toward this kind of connected home setup for a while now, and this LG partnership looks like the moment it gets real hardware to back that vision up.

The LG branding angle is worth thinking about more carefully. Apple partnering with a major manufacturer isn’t new, but typically Apple keeps tight control over how products look and feel under its ecosystem. Letting LG take the brand credit here suggests this might be a calculated move to reach consumers who aren’t already deep in the Apple universe. LG has its own loyal customer base, particularly in home appliances and displays. If these devices work natively with Apple’s hub and HomeKit but don’t scream “Apple tax”, they could pull in buyers who would otherwise go straight to Amazon or Google Nest.

The timing also matters. Amazon has dominated the smart home security space through Ring, and Google has Nest locked in as a premium thermostat and camera brand. Apple has had HomeKit for years, but the hardware support has always felt patchy, dependent on third-party manufacturers who sometimes delivered and sometimes didn’t. A direct partnership with LG, where Apple is reportedly involved in the actual development of the devices, is a very different approach.

Here’s what the reported lineup looks like:

  • Smart lock
  • Smart thermostat
  • Video doorbell
  • Indoor security camera
  • Outdoor security camera
  • Floodlight camera

Pricing and full availability details haven’t been confirmed yet, but with an expected announcement window around October 13, we probably won’t be waiting long. Apple hasn’t officially commented on any of this. But if even half of this lineup delivers, the smart home space is about to get a lot more competitive.
