OnePlus made a phone cooler smaller than your bank card

Thermal throttling is the silent killer of mobile gaming. Your phone gets hot, the chip slows itself down to survive, and suddenly your perfectly smooth session turns into a slideshow. OnePlus just took a swing at this with something genuinely interesting: a magnetic cooler the size of a credit card that costs about thirty bucks.

The device is called the Magnetic Ice Card Mini Cooler, and OnePlus launched it in China at 199 yuan alongside the OnePlus 16. It’s a thermoelectric heatsink, which means it actively pulls heat away from the back of your phone rather than just sitting there doing nothing like a passive case would. That distinction matters.

The body is polycarbonate and aluminum alloy, just 9.7 mm thick at its slimmest point. It snaps on magnetically with 10 N of holding force, and OnePlus includes a magnetic plate in the box so it works with most Android phones that don’t already have built-in magnets. That’s a smart call. It means this isn’t a OnePlus-only accessory, even if the deeper software integration is reserved for Oppo and OnePlus devices running ColorOS X.

There are two fan modes, and the noise levels are actually reasonable:

  • Low mode: around 25 dB, quiet enough to forget it’s there
  • High mode: around 35 dB, still below normal conversation volume
  • A status LED shows blue for high, green for low, and red if something goes wrong
  • USB-C power input draws up to 5V at 0.7A, so you can run it straight from your phone
  • A 10,000 mAh power bank keeps it running for up to eight hours on the highest setting

Running it off your phone’s own battery is a trade-off worth thinking about. You’re using power to stay cool, which affects your gaming time. But plugging it into a power bank is a clean workaround, and for long sessions at a desk or on a couch, that setup makes total sense.

Phone cooling accessories have existed for years, but most of them are bulky, loud, or weirdly expensive. This one checks the right boxes: small enough to pocket, quiet enough to ignore, and priced where it belongs. It ships in Silver Wing Grey and comes with a cable, lanyard, magnetic plate, and auxiliary film. No word yet on global availability, but at $30, if it makes it out of China, it’ll be hard to ignore.
