Apple just got serious about smart home with its own hardware lineup

Apple selling branded smart home hardware is something nobody really saw coming. But here we are. Apple has announced the Apple Home Collection, a lineup of cameras, thermostats, temperature sensors, a video doorbell, and a smart deadbolt lock, built in collaboration with LG Electronics and Schneider Electric.

This is a big deal because Apple has spent years letting third-party brands fill the smart home gap. Works with Apple Home and Matter support gave the ecosystem breadth, but not depth. The Home Collection changes that. These aren’t just compatible accessories, they’re co-designed products built to work entirely inside the Apple Home app. No extra app, no separate account, no subscription for basic camera history. Video is stored in your iCloud+ plan and encrypted end-to-end. Apple, LG, and Schneider Electric say they can’t read your home data. That’s the pitch.

The camera lineup from LG is actually interesting. Four options, including an indoor cam that physically tilts away when everyone’s home, and tilts back when you check in remotely. That’s a real privacy feature, not a sticker over a lens. The Video Doorbell has dual cameras, one for faces and one pointed down at packages. All cameras shoot up to 2.5K, support low-light color night vision, and work with Apple Intelligence to generate automatic video descriptions and natural language search on eligible iCloud+ plans.

The Smart Deadbolt Lock uses Ultra Wideband to detect when you’re approaching and unlocks automatically. No tapping required if you have a home key on iPhone or Apple Watch.

Most products arrive in December, with select accessories rolling into early 2027. Apple is clearly positioning the Home app as a real platform now, not just a dashboard for scattered third-party gear. If the hardware quality matches the promise, this could finally give smart home a face people actually trust.
