HomePod mini 2 is here, and Siri finally sounds like it means business

Apple just gave its little smart speaker a serious makeover, and for once, the AI pitch actually sounds convincing. The company announced HomePod mini 2 on October 13, and the headliner is Siri AI, a rebuilt assistant powered by Apple Foundation Models that can hold real conversations, pull context from your iPhone apps, and answer questions using live web data.

The Siri AI features are coming in a future software update, not at launch. That’s worth knowing upfront. But when it arrives, it can do things like find a song a friend texted you about, pull a recipe from an email, or set a reminder tied to a calendar event. It recognizes up to six household voices and connects securely to each person’s apps. Even users without an Apple Intelligence-compatible iPhone will get the smarter conversation and music discovery features, which is a nice touch.

On the audio side, HomePod mini 2 runs on Apple’s S10 chip and supports a proper four-speaker surround sound setup when paired with the new Apple TV 4K. That’s a first for the mini lineup, and it’s the kind of feature that makes a real difference in a living room. There’s also Sound Glow, which pulses light on the top of the speaker in sync with music using album artwork colors. Gimmick? Maybe. Fun? Probably.

  • Five colors: pink, green, blue, white, and midnight
  • Four-speaker surround sound with Apple TV 4K (4th gen)
  • Sound Glow visual light display
  • Can work as a Mac speaker
  • Sound Recognition for smoke and carbon monoxide alarms

Pre-orders are open now, with availability starting October 30. No pricing was mentioned in the announcement, but the original HomePod mini launched at $99, so expect something in that range.
