Copenhagen, Denmark-based Vopium announced that it has raised $16.5 million investment from Indian investor – Raghuvinder Kataria. This financial injection effectively makes Mr. Kataria majority owner of the company.
Vopium said it will use the new money to expand internationally and reach more users.
According to Raghuvinder Kataria — who was one of the early investors in Bharti Tele-Ventures, together with Sunil Bharti Mittal — Skype could use an additional competition and he expects to have 10 million Vopium users in a few years.
In addition to providing low-cost VoIP-based calls, Vopium’s mobile app (available on multiple platforms) also allows users to keep up with their buddies across IM networks, including Skype, GTalk, MSN, Twitter, Facebook and so on. It was originally intended for immigrants who were looking for cheap telephony solutions to get in contact with family and friends in distant countries.
