Apple just released the latest version of its software for the iPhone and iPod Touch and iOS 4.1 has some new Bluetooth features that should make mobile music fans happy.
For the longest of time, Apple iPhone fans were disappointed with the lack of stereo Bluetooth. This finally came in iOS 3.0 but you didn’t have the AVRCP profile. This means that while you can use Bluetooth to listen to audio, you weren’t able to skip tracks, adjust the volume or have adequate control outside of the device.
That’s changed with the latest version of the firmware, as the AVRCP profile is included in the iOS 4.1 build. This means you should have more control over the music-playing functionality on, say, your in-car entertainment unit or your Bluetooth headset. This should make the Apple iPhone a more versatile mobile music machine.
I don’t think it’s going out on a limb to say that the Apple iPhone is the best mobile music experience currently out there. This shouldn’t be much of a surprise because of the iPod roots but I think this is often overlooked in the smartphone discussions. I love my Droid X but it’s kind of a painful experience to really rock out because the interface is kind of boring. Research In Motion has also made incredible strides with its multimedia software over the last few years but it’s still a few steps behind the Apple iPhone.
This added Bluetooth functionality should help the Apple iPhone cement its lead in the mobile music space. Download the new software and let us know what you think.
