Maybe you should have waited in those long lines because it looks like the Motorola Droid X for Verizon is still sold out in many retail stores, according to Gleacher & Co. analyst Mark McKechnie.
In a research note, an analyst did supply checks and said there was “no supply available at retail as all production is still going to fill ‘pre-order’ backlog.” I know how difficult it has been, as my sister in law desperately wants a Motorola Droid X but was told there weren’t any left in stores … in all of Southern California!
Verizon’s website still allows you to order the device but it won’t ship out until August 4 (as of this morning). That appears to be the best bet for now, plus you won’t have to deal with the disappointment of going to a store and walking out empty handed.
Prior to the launch, we had heard that Verizon Motorola Droid X supplies would be limited but Verizon softly claimed it would probably be ready for the launch. That didn’t appear to happen.
It’s still unclear what’s causing the delay, as we’re looking into the suppliers Motorola is using. We know that HTC had to ditch Samsung for Sony because it couldn’t keep up AMOLED screen supplies.
Another factor that could be impacting demand is that Verizon took a page out of AT&T’s book by enabling early upgrades. That means anyone with a handset upgrade eligibility in 2010 could purchase the Motorola Droid X for the entry-level price of $200 with a new two-year contract. Well, you could get it if you could find it …
At the very least, this shows that there is a strong demand for smartphones on Verizon and we just saw a report suggesting Verizon smartphone users used more data on a monthly basis than Apple iPhone users. Have you been able to get the Verizon Motorola Droid X?
