Official Android 2.2 (Froyo) test ROM for Samsung Galaxy S leaked to the masses

Well it sure didn’t take very long for the new Samsung Galaxy S to get rooted, and now we’re already seeing the official Samsung Galaxy S Android 2.2 test ROM leaking out from Samsung Mobile. The smartphone maker seems to not be wasting any time getting the latest version of the Android OS, known by its delicious-sounding codename Froyo, playing nice with their TouchWiz 3.0 UI. And, we couldn’t be happier to see the test ROM leaked to the masses.

Now, before you download the files and try to flash them to your T-Mobile Samsung Vibrant or AT&T Samsung Captivate, (their respective carrier’s variants of the Galaxy S) we should warn you that it will not work. The leaked Froyo ROM is intended only for the original (stock) Samsung Galaxy S, and not for any variant. While the official update for the variants may not be too far away, this leak will likely lead to hacked ROMs being available sometime soon.

Keep in mind that this leaked version of the Galaxy S Android 2.2 ROM seems to be just a test release. So, if you do flash this ROM, you’ll likely be looking to your previous, more stable and bug-free Android build, if it’s even possible to do so. Some have said that you can’t revert back to the previous Android 2.1 build if you flash this leaked ROM, so just keep your hands off until more testing is done.

For the Galaxy S variant users out there, I’d give this about a month to get off the ground. After then, we may see the official release, a rooted release, and possibly a build coming from CyanogenMod, which is now under way. In due time, we’ll have multiple Android 2.2 Froyo ROMs to choose from, and the hacks and mods will follow in full force. This test release is just a precursor to that, but at least we know it’s on its way.

I just wish other manufacturers would take some cues from Samsung and hurry up their Froyo development. That said, Samsung’s TouchWiz UI is nowhere near as integrated into the Android OS like skins such as HTC Sense, and might make the TouchWiz builds of Froyo easier to make.

Here’s to a speedy Froyo test release being leaked, as now users have something to play around with until the real deal comes our way.

Check out the video below to see some of the optimizations in the test release. The video does not show the newest ROM, so some things may have been fixed since it was recorded.
