The Wholesale Applications Community (WAC), an alliance of companies committed to building an open applications platform which was announced during this year’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain has been officially formed as a corporate entity. Moreover, it [WAC] has joined forces with the Joint Innovation Lab (JIL) to “accelerate the commercial launch of WAC-enabled application stores.”
The transaction is expected to be completed in September 2010, and the WAC Specification and SDK are set to be released in November. The mentioned specification will be based on W3C standards and “create a strong platform for developing rich mobile web applications.” WAC will also provide backwards compatibility for devices based upon the current JIL and BONDI specifications. All the details regarding the developer roadmap will be available in September.
Peters Suh, which used to be the the CEO of the Joint Innovation Lab (JIL), has been named the WAC CEO. Prior to JIL, Peters held a number of executive positions at Vodafone, Fremont Communications and AirTouch.
In addition to Peters, Michel Combes (Vodafone Chief Executive Europe) and Jean-Philippe Vanot (Deputy CEO, France Telecom) have been elected as Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Wholesale Applications Community…
