Kenya Gives PrePaid SIM Card Registration an Extension

And in today’s global news, “What’s Happening in Kenya” edition, we’re hearing that pre-paid SIM card registration is getting an extension. The government has agreed to give users an additional month to register their pre-paid SIM cards – up to the end of this month. Otherwise, those SIMs could have been cut off this weekend, which would have resulted in about eight million SIM cards deactivated.

In the meantime, the Kenyan government will also have time to pass two new laws which will hopefully make it easier for law makers to prosecute those who illegally sold pre-paid SIM cards. According to Cellular-News, as of July 27 there were 20.18 million subscribers in Kenya, with only 12.42 million registered.

Scammers and terrorists beware! You’ll likely have to revert back to smoke signals, carrier pigeons, or the old two-cans-with-string trick as your SIM will likely be killed off at the end of the month unless you register.
