Android AT&T - Sony Xperia X10

Hey, remember the Sony Xperia X10 Android smartphone? It looked like a killer Android handset when it was introduced last year but it has still yet to see a real U.S. launch with a carrier but that may be changing soon.

According to a tip by the Boy Genius, the Sony Ericsson has passed through AT&T’s technical process and should be available in the “coming weeks.” No exact word on pricing but anything more than $149 would make it dead on arrival, in my books.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 actually still holds up pretty well in terms of specs, as it sports a 4-inch screen, 1 GHz Snapdragon processor, 8-megapixel camera and all the connectivity goodness you’d expect from a device of this class. Unfortunately, we’re not sure what version of Android it will launch with and the software was a pain in the rear when I reviewed it.

Speaking of which, here’s what you need to know about the unlocked version of the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10:

The Xperia X10 would have been the belle of the Android ball if it was fully released late last year. I’m still a big fan of the hardware but the software is not up to par. I applaud Sony Ericsson for trying to spruce up Android but this falls short … Even if it launches subsidized on AT&T, as expected, it would still be tough to recommend it considering all the great Android devices like the EVO 4G, Droid Incredible and what we may see from Dell. Better luck next time, Sony Ericsson.

I do think that Android 2.2, or Froyo, would breathe new life into the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 but there’s no word on when that would hit the smartphone. Oh, BGR also says the Sony Ericsson Vivaz could also hit AT&T by September.

Anyone excited?
