Motorola Droid 2 (Android) accessories land in Verizon stores

In another sign that the launch of the Motorola Droid 2 isn’t too far away, official accessories have started to show up at Verizon stores.

The original Droid was the first major Android handset to hit Verizon and it has been a smash hit. I know when I mill about in San Francisco, the Motorola Droid is the only other phone that I see almost as often as the Apple iPhone.

So, what’s new with the Motorola Droid 2? Verizon outlined the top five features and the top one should probably be Android 2.2 or Froyo. This will provide full Adobe Flash support, the ability to save apps to SD cards, and faster overall browsing and phone performance.

The Motorola Droid 2 on Verizon also features a slight redesign. It still sports the same 3.7-inch screen but it has a beefed up processor. The slide-out QWERTY keyboard has also been changed, as there’s no longer a d-pad. Hopefully, that will mean the keys have a bit more room to breathe and should be easier to type on.

A lot has happened since the launch of the original Motorola Droid, as there are now multiple superphones from the likes of HTC, Samsung and even Motorola with the Droid X. It will be interesting to see if this sequel can replicate the success of the original.

Because it has a full QWERTY keyboard, I’d say the biggest competitor is the Samsung Epic 4G on Sprint. This device also has a slide-out keyboard, rocks a 4-inch Super AMOLED screen, runs Android and sports a front-facing camera for video calls. It will also be able to take advantage of Sprint’s 4G network for faster mobile data speeds, although that will cost about an extra $10 a month.

The Android Motorola Droid 2 on Verizon is tantalizingly close to an official announcement folks, as we’re hearing word that it could be announced as early as next week. We’ll keep an eye on this one.
