The Clearwire iSpot 4G hotspot has been hacked to support more than just Apple iOS devices

The Clearwire iSpot 4G was a super-cool mobile hotspot that could use unlimited WiMax for only $25 a month but there was a couple of huge caveats: it was 4G-only, so you could only use it in a few markets and it only worked with Apple iOS devices like the iPhone and iPad. Well, one of those problems has been fixed, as an easy hack will let you bring 4G goodness to any WiFi-enabled device.

According to the website Ispotunrestricted, there’s a very simple way to let your non-Apple devices take advantage of this 4G hotspot and you won’t have to dive deep into it and mess with shell commands. To be very, very clear: This will void your warranty and if Clear gets a hold that you’re doing this, it has every right to bump up your monthly data charges.

Apparently all you have to do is download a config file, load it on the iSpot 4G admin file (be careful not to rename it) and it will turn off your device. Once it boots back up you should see:

You will see a new access point called “IMW-C600W” without any encryption, besure to re-enable those settings.
or
You will see a new access point called “iSpot – Unrestricted”, which is WPA encrypted with a password of “unrestricted”.
After that all devices are now able to connect without any issues. And you don’t even have to mess with any shell commands! Enjoy!

The iSpot 4G is a cool idea that’ somewhat limited by the ability to only play nice with Apple iOS devices and it will be interesting to see how many users take advantage of this hack and how Clear responds. The ZTE Peel is also supposed to bring 3G connectivity to an iPod Touch and it will be fun to watch how soon that thing gets cracked.
