While many of developed countries still wait for the first LTE network, Ucell — a subsidiary of Sweden’s TeliaSonera — is launching second LTE network in Uzbekistan. As you may recall, Russia’s MTS was the first operator to offer LTE services in the country, using hardware from China’s Huawei.
Other Chinese company, ZTE, provided the network equipment for TeliaSonera’s network launch, which BTW is operator’s third LTE market — the first two are Sweden and Norway.
For the record, MTS and Ucell are the country’s first- and second-largest carriers respectively, with a combined 78% share of the market.
According to ZTE, Ucell’s new network supports peak download speeds of 100Mbps, and uses its software defined radio and Uni-RAN infrastructure solutions. Ucell on its end praises the new network to deliver speeds that are “ten times faster than today’s 3G networks.”
As of July 2010, ZTE has deployed seven commercial LTE networks and is supporting more than 50 trial deployments around the world.
