Weekend twitter users prefer to tweet from a mobile device

Do you tweet on the weekend? If so, a recent report suggests that you are most likely using your mobile phone to broadcast your thoughts in 140 characters or less. This recent study originates from SocialFlow, a social media marketing startup, that analyzed the reading patterns of  500,000 twitter users who follow one of its clients. Rather than looking directly at tweets, the study analyzed the data obtained from followers that click on bit.ly links.

SocialFlow discovered that mobile usage skyrockets and desktop usage plummets on the weekend. Mobile usage peaks on Friday and Saturday night and falls back down to weeknight levels late on Sunday. On any given Saturday night, approximately 41% of clicks originate from mobile devices. We have seen a similar statistic thrown around earlier this year that suggested 37% of tweets were posted from a mobile device, so it is interesting to see this stat hold firm four months later.

Looking at the week as a whole, mobile twitter users were more active during the morning rush hour and at night; less active in the wee hours of the morning and during the day. Nice to see you twitter users actually putting your phone away to catch some shut eye and do an honest day’s work.

Due to the amount of data SocialFlow was able to compile for this study, it is obvious that mobile twitter users are not afraid to clink on links and read long-form content on their mobile devices. In part, it must be that beautiful retina display of the iPhone 4 or that enormous screen of the EVO 4G and DROID X that make reading on your phone a pleasurable experience; it also doesn’t hurt that most mobile phones have 24/7 Internet access and awesome twitter clients.
