Motorola said that the number of iDEN subscribers has reached 10 million outside of the USA. The company’s proprietary iDEN technology is currently in operation with more than 30 network operators in 23 countries worldwide. In the U.S., it is used by NexTel and its affiliates such as Boost Mobile.
Commenting on the news, Gene Delaney, executive vice president of Product & Business Operations, Motorola Solutions, said: “Motorola continues to develop and support our iDEN technology as a feature-rich, high-quality solution for our customers. Furthermore, iDEN’s wide variety of communications services enables operators to serve many market segments with a single economical network solution.”
One of the latest iDEN-based products is Motorola i1, which is the first Android-powered smartphone with push-to-talk capability.
Honestly, I don’t think Motorola should invest too much of its resources into further development of iDEN-based products and services. Rather, they should focus on GSM and CDMA-based solutions as the two technologies (GSM especially) are used by a vast majority of population…
