We heard about this Android tablet a while ago, and now it looks like it’s finally nearing its release. The WeTab, formerly the WePad is said to start shipping this September in Germany.
Though we haven’t heard too much about an official U.S. release, I wouldn’t be surprised if we didn’t see it shortly after the launch in Germany. If not, eh, we have a lot of tablets to look forward to that we know will be coming stateside. Not only will the WeTab be running Android and the thousands of applications from the Market, but it will also run Linux, Java, and AIR applications to boot. The device will also support Flash 10.1 and has a grand set of specs to drool over.
That said, I’m not too much in love with the user interface they’ve put on the WeTab. While I’m a fan of widgets, the previews of the WeTab look a mess, and it’s void of any presence of Android from the looks of it. That doesn’t make me want to play with one any less, but it does make me not want to buy one. The WeTab is one of the bigger tablets we’ve heard of – coming with an 11.6-inch screen – so you’ll have plenty of room to work with, and with its 1366 x 768 resolution, viewing videos should be quite a pleasurable experience.
As far as pricing goes, there will be two versions of the WeTab. There will be a WiFi-only version which will set you back €449 ($575 ), and a WiFi + 3G version that will run €569 ($880). So, this thing isn’t going to be cheap and I’m having a hard time believing this particular tablet will sell all that well at this price point.
It’s still looks like a great tablet, but that’s too much for my cheap ass. Even with the WeTab’s nice spec sheet, it still didn’t make our Top 5 most anticipated tablets list, as it’s just not compelling enough. Great specs don’t mean a great experience.
Hey, Apple has proved you don’t need great specs to make a great tablet, so competitors should make sure they are laser-focused on user experience just as much as they are trying to beef up the specs of the device.
Does the WeTab do it for you? Hit us up in the comments!
