The HTC Desire is now available in the States through U.S. Cellular, which is good news for the folks on the smaller carrier. The news of the smartphone’s arrival with the carrier going on for months must have built up a bit of anxiety. Up until now, the Big Four have been getting all the good stuff, but this latest Android handset from HTC hits the regional carrier starting today. The Desire packs a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, a 3.7-inch display, 5 megapixel camera and Wi-Fi all wrapped up with Android 2.1 or Eclair.

With a contract, the HTC Desire will set you back $199.95 after mail-in rebate. While it’s sporting Android 2.1 where many new Android handsets are already rocking 2.2 or Froyo, the US Cellular version of the Desire may get upgraded soon as the Vodafone version overseas has already been updated.

If you’re thinking of picking up the HTC Desire for yourself or a friend or loved one, feel free to check out our video unboxing and initial impressions of the device here. Also be sure to stay tuned for our full review of the Android handset coming very soon.
