Megacable, the Mexican cable TV operator which we expected to enter the mobile space, has unveiled plans to launch an MVNO operation in the country through partnership with Telefonica. As a result, Megacable is emerging as the first firm in Mexico to offer a “quad-play” offering of mobile, fixed-line phone, Internet and TV.
The two companies (Megacable and Telefonica) issued a joint statement, telling the world the new virtual operator will start offering mobile services in the main cities within Megacable’s coverage area by the end of the year.
At the moment, Megacable has over 1.7 million cable TV subscribers in more than 200 local markets, and is one of Mexico’s largest “triple play” providers.
Telefonica on its end likes the idea to have more people using its network. At the moment, the Spanish company is the second-largest operator in Mexico with just under 19 million customers, trailing the market-leading Telcel (owned by America Movil).
