Samsung is reportedly considering throwing out two telephoto cameras and replacing them with a single, larger one. That’s a bold call, and honestly, it’s the kind of camera decision that could either be brilliant or a massive step backward depending on how it plays out.
According to AndroidHeadlines, Samsung is testing a 4x telephoto camera for the Galaxy S27 Ultra that uses a 1/1.9-inch sensor. To put that in perspective, the Galaxy S26 Ultra currently runs a 1/2.52-inch sensor on its telephoto. This new one is significantly larger, which means better light capture and more detail in tricky lighting situations. Those are real, tangible improvements. Not marketing fluff.
The current Galaxy S26 Ultra has a 3x and a 5x telephoto working together. That dual setup gives you flexible zoom coverage across a range of distances. Replace both with a single 4x lens and you’re betting that one really good camera does the job better than two more modest ones. It’s a philosophical shift, and Samsung fans are already debating it hard. Some will also point out that Apple moved to 4x telephoto on the iPhone 17 Pro last year, so prepare for that conversation to get loud.

CAD leaks published recently do suggest Samsung is moving back toward a triple-camera setup from the current quad setup, which lines up loosely with this rumor. Samsung has built the Galaxy Ultra identity around versatility, including multiple zoom lengths to cover different shooting scenarios. Collapsing that into one focal length is a real trade-off. If the sensor quality is strong enough, and the 200MP main camera can carry the load at short zoom distances, then a large-sensor 4x telephoto could produce sharper, cleaner images than the current dual setup.
