Baidu has launched a searchable applications library which allows third-party apps to be launched directly within its website. I’m not sure how this exactly works, but from what I’ve understood, an app will be shown to the customer when he or she searches for a specific product or application category.
Obviously, the next step is to bring bits of this service to the mobile community, though no specific plans were unveiled. It seems to me Baidu is gathering developers and is looking for ways to transfer some of the apps to its mobile client.
On the downside, this apps and search strategy may prove to be hurting smaller companies which no longer will get click-throughs as their apps could be started right from Baidu.
Again, I don’t see how this works, but I’ve no doubts Baidu is well aware of all the mobile users in China and wants to serve their needs (while making some cash along the way, of course).
We’ll definitely keep our eyes on China and let you know as soon as something new and cool emerges from the giant economy. Stay tuned…
